Many people who read blog posts use search engines to find what they read, so you need to do what you can to have your blog rank highly when people search for terms related to what you are writing. Thus, when writing a blog post you must consider your audience AND the digital web-crawlers employed by search engines like Google.  This should be part of your digital strategy. Here's a few tips to help you write SEO-friendly blog posts.

USE WORDS & PHRASES PEOPLE SEARCH FOR

Before you start to write, take some time to make a list of the words and phrases you think people in your audience will use to find your blog post.  Once you have made your list use something like Google Insights to determine how popular the search words and phrases you've come up with really are.  Maybe there are better words you could be using.

Once you have a good list, choose the words you use in your title carefully.  The title of your post is one of the first things Google, Bing and Yahoo! see.  Obviously, these words are important.

CHOOSE YOUR TAGS CAREFULLY

Tags can be important.  They help organize your blog posts so search engines and readers are able to find what they are looking for.  Google may look at your tags as one of the factors they use to rank your site in its search ranking for those terms.  Google likes it when you link to other blog posts you have written.  Google also likes it when your tags are used in other posts you have written.

Don't add too many tags.  We believe you should add less than ten tags to each blog post. Google and other search engines are suspicious of too many tags and think you are trying to use tags that don't really relate to what you've written in order to gain readership. Search engines will penalize you for doing this, so don't.

Of course there are other things you can do to write SEO-friendly blog posts and increase the readership of your blog. These tips are a good start.  Try them out and continue to check you analytics to gauge how they are working.  If you have a tip of your own, please leave them in a comment below.
