Samsung's latest product, The Galaxy Mega, is undoubtedly the biggest smart phone on the market today. With the screen measuring 6.3 inches diagonally, the Mega looks more like a tablet than it does a phone. The phone will hit AT&T stores on Friday and will sell for $150 with a two year service contract. The Galaxy Mega is also coming to Sprint and U.S. Cellular. Samsung is describing this giant smart phone as a hybrid that combines the portability of a smart phone with the immersive experience that a tablet can offer. Not only can you make phone calls with it but you can also use it to search the Internet, read books, and play music and games.
“We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more” said JK Shin of Samsung. “We are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers’ varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning GALAXY series”.
The “Phablet”
Obviously this phone is receiving a great deal of attention. Some critics believe that Samsung has helped to popularize the so-called “phablet” category, while others believe that the new size is far too big to still be considered a cell phone. The word “phablet” has been developed for a mobile gadget with a screen that measures more than 5 inches diagonally. If you’re having trouble putting the size of the Galaxy Mega into perspective, the Apple iPhone 5 measures 4 inches diagonally.
What do you think about this new phone? I can certainly understand liking the idea of being able to do more on a cell phone, but I’m not sure if I could compromise the convenience of the size. I find Samsungs current Galaxy S4 hard to hold in one hand, and the phone measures 5.4 inches diagonally. It will be interesting to see how people respond to the introduction of this new giant phone. Who knows, maybe in the next few months we’ll start to see a combination of the iPad and the iPhone. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.
