Stimulate Activity In Your Online Community

Are you looking to stimulate activity in your online community? Often times we have many members, but little engagement. Try asking these types of questions:

What is your favorite ….? This question is likely to stimulate a response.

How do you participate on social media sites on a daily basis? People love to talk about themselves, and they'll tell you what they do daily.

What do you think about ….? People love to share their opinions.

Can you recommend ….? People love to show off the things they know about.

Can you recommend a fix to …..? Make it a real question and you'll be surprised at the number of helpful tips you receive.

I ( ) better than ( )? Make this question a bit controversial and see what happens.

List your top 5 …. Ranking is everyone's favorite thing to do. Ask people to rank their top five of anything. Maybe even set it up as a poll on your community's site.

How would you handle ….? Let you community members help you handle an issue that has come up in the community. Maybe someone is using your community to drum up business for themselves and they are just spamming you all the time. Ask the other members how to handle it before you just delete that person's posts.

What ( ) do you use? Almost every online community can ask this type of question asking people to compare products they use, or new products on the market.

Has anyone tried ….? This is another great way to get opinion on various products people may want to purchase.

Obviously, the more open-ended your question, the more likely it is that a number of different people will respond. You may even want to touch base with a few members after you post a question and ask them to comment. This will get the ball rolling. After all, what's the point of having an online community if there is little or no interaction with its members.

Give some of these questions a try and let me know how they work. Feel free to add your own thoughts about good questions to ask in the comments below.
