Turning Your Thoughts Into Revenue Generating Words

The Digital Slice Podcast is brought to you by The Friedman Group, LLC

In this episode of The Digital Slice Podcast, Brad Friedman and Matt Banker, Founder and Lead Strategist at Benchmark Growth Marketing, dive deep into the concept of translating thoughts into words that generate revenue for accounting firms.

Matt is the founder and lead strategist at Benchmark Growth Marketing, a marketing agency specifically for B2B accounting firms. Matt started designing and building websites at a small agency, and he grew frustrated that there wasn’t a better way to create content for
a website. It didn’t make sense to ask the client to decide what the site should say. After all, they weren’t marketing experts. Super smart people often have the most trouble translating their thoughts into words that the rest of us can understand. This tendency carries through to business owners and how they try to market their companies.

Matt brings a ‘words first’ approach to marketing because his superpower is the ability to help business owners communicate more clearly. He works with executive teams and marketing teams to build alignment and buy-in so everyone is rowing in the same direction.

These days Matt focuses his efforts on serving a narrow niche: accounting firms. With a background in fine arts, he is the Yin to a number-cruncher’s Yang. He helps them build marketing engines that work to grow their firms.

In this Episode:

  • Matt talks about how his degree in Fine Arts (Installation Sculpture) transfer over to a career in marketing for accountants.
  • Matt thinks marketing and fine arts is like the same skillset, just moving in different directions.
  • Matt shares his insight into the benefits of niching down and marketing to a very narrow and defined niche.
  • Matt discusses the hard work necessary to drive qualified leads to your website and business.
  • Matt also discusses his thoughts on the need to have a marketing budget.

Quotes from this Episode:
“It seems like a lot of times you're trying to take like normal, banal things and kind of obscure it and make it more interesting.” – Matt Banker
“If you're a generalist firm, the thing is, you really need to focus on your local market.” – Matt Banker
“Don't send good traffic to a bad website.” – Matt Banker
“I think one of the big mistakes a lot of small businesses make is that they haven't actually built a marketing budget or a way to fund marketing in an ongoing way.” – Matt Banker
“Marketing isn't a light switch that you just flip on and off when you need the leads.” – Matt Banker
“I like to think marketing is it's like a hypothesis. Right? Like you're testing a theory.” – Matt Banker
“You have to be aware that when people are in the most pain, that's when they're most ready to spend money to hire you.” – Matt Banker

“So most people start too early with marketing. Because marketing is fun.” – Simon Severino
“First, you turn your costs from fixed costs into variable costs. When there is more work, you have more costs. When there is zero work, you have zero costs. That's very important.” – Simon Severino
“Now you have increased your profitability by a lot, and this brings the fun back into business because now you have cash flow that you can redeploy into, you know, trainings for your people. Whatever is fun. You have a retreat in Bali” – Simon Severino
“Now, many of your competitors, if you are a financial advisor, if you are an accountant, an accountancy agency, financial agency, professional services. One thing I can tell you because I am in that space every day. So next year 2023, many of your competitors will be insolvent. You can buy them. So prepare now your cash flow, your profitability, your systems” – Simon Severino

Why Inbound Marketing Is Perfect For Professional Services Providers

Why Inbound Marketing Is Perfect For Professional Services Providers

In the professional world, there are two types of businesses and each markets in very different ways. Businesses with “Customers” always want more customers. Marketing is a way of life, whole departments are dedicated to it, and they do so with proud gusto.

Then there are businesses and individual professionals with “Clients.” This group includes doctors, lawyers, financial advisors, and other professions that focus on the skills of one or a small team of highly trained professionals. Businesses with clients will tend to have practices instead of shops or venues. Each year, they only take on a manageable number of new clients, and just want clients whose needs truly fit the services these businesses have to offer. And for this kind of business, marketing is often seen as ‘low' or too ‘salesy' for the refined and respectful reputation of your practice. (more…)

Professional Services Providers: Important Inbound Marketing Strategies

What do most doctors, lawyers, insurance brokers, and real estate agents all have in common? They are all professional services providers who generally have location-specific businesses. It is not uncommon for each of these professionals to receive 80 percent or more of their business from within a 25-mile radius of their office(s). Therefore, the most important inbound marketing strategy for professional services providers will build a very localized audience of potential clients. Don't you agree? (more…)
