Building A Company That Believes Garbage Is Optional

The Digital Slice Podcast is brought to you by The Friedman Group, LLC

In this episode of The Digital Slice Podcast, Brad Friedman and Brad Pedersen, Co-founder and Chairman at Pela, talk about the idea that garbage is optional. That if you hire the right people, they're free. And the importance of storytelling.

Brad is a serial entrepreneur who’s built multiple companies with revenues ranging from 7 to 9 figures and up to 130 employees. His latest venture is as a co-founder of Pela, a direct-to-consumer e-commerce company committed to creating a waste-free future.

To empower their mission, the company created Lomi; an electronic kitchen composter that magically turns your organic waste into dirt while you sleep. This unique device dramatically reduces food waste going to landfills and empowers users to make positive contributions to reducing GHG. The product was launched by Indiegogo, raising $8M and went on to become the largest cleantech crowdfunding campaign of all time.

Pela has been a fast growth company, named to the Deloitte Fast 50 and ranked #20 amongst the Growth 500 in Canada.

In this Episode:

  • Brad talks about his start in the business world working as Santa Claus.
  • Brad talks about being a creator, and making products with a graceful end-of-life designed in the beginning.
  • Brad talks about shifting his thinking from marketing in the B2B space, to marketing in the B2C space.
  • Brad talks about the importance of storytelling to hire the right people.
  • Brad also talks about building a business that believes garbage is optional.

Quotes from this Episode:
“Business is a game and we are in it to win it.” – Brad Pederson
“We have a philosophy at the company. If you hire the right people, they're free.” – Brad Pederson
“I think if there's a way to reach an audience we're exploring it, we're testing and that's the other thing I love about this company is that we produce on a weekly basis dozens of pieces of content.” – Brad Pederson
“And we are doing AB testing all the time and firing a lot of bullets and hopefully one of the messages lands that we can turn it into cannonballs.” – Brad Pederson
“I have come to see that it's incredibly powerful when you have a direct to consumer audience and the ability to influence people directly, and most especially to create a mailing list, which is your owned audience that you can use and create incredible leverage with.” – Brad Pederson
“We as leaders, as companies have to be telling better stories and better narratives about what it is we're trying to solve.” – Brad Pederson

Join Brad Friedman and Zee Jeremic as they chat about the new age of marketing. And how marketers need to shift their thinking to align with the thinking of today's consumer.

Zee is the founder and CEO of MASS Engines, which maps and automates the customer journey to increase deal velocity and closure, enabling enterprise organizations like Samsung, Intel, and Informa to optimize lead flow and transform their funnel.

They focus on building the mass communication engines of the future.

Zee is an innovative business technologist passionate about building revenue engines for growth companies to harness the full power of existing marketing and sales investments.

A master management consultant, Zee is focused on business process optimizations and has helped many Fortune 500 and mid-market companies integrate their marketing and sales systems and processes to drive outstanding results.

In this Episode:

  • Zee talks about the four levers available to companies and how using all four levers leads to growth.
  • Zee talks about how marketing and sales has changed over the past 20 years.
  • Zee talks about how consumers are doing their own research because the internet enables them to avoid talking with a sales rep for as long as possible. So, if you want to make the sale, you must get the consumer to engage with your content.
  • Zee talks about how the marketing team owns content creation because the sales team must focus on closing.
  • Zee also talks about how to identify key moments in the Buyer's Journey and how the marketing team can tailor content to each stage.

Quotes from this Episode:
“When you look at how companies grow, there's really three levers, right? You spend more money on ads. You hire more sales reps. Or you open a new channel.” – Zee Jeremic
“So what's fascinating about how the technology has been evolving is that there's actually a new fourth lever now that's available to companies to grow their revenue.” – Zee Jeremic
“20 years ago, people used to walk into three car dealerships before buying a car. Well, eight years ago, they used to walk into 0.8.” – Zee Jeremic
“And if you're consuming my content, you are gonna believe the same thing that I believe. And what my company believes in, therefore, you're gonna buy from me day in and day out.” – Zee Jeremic
“What you need, really need to look at is what problem does your customer have? And how do they search for those problems?” – Zee Jeremic

Join Brad Friedman and Chris Madden as they chat about digital marketing, NFTs, cryptocurrency, and how it all can be used to grow your business.

Chris Madden is the Co-Founder of Matchnode, a digital marketing agency that uses strategy and advertising to help established brands that are shifting to digital. He also started Seabums, an NFT project focused on massively improving ocean health. They’ve donated over $144,000 to ocean charities so far. Chris and his team have worked on digital ad campaigns for the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Blackhawks, LendingTree, Indiana University, and New Balance.

As a career entrepreneur, before Matchnode Chris founded and/or led companies that produced music videos (CelebrateIt.TV), sold tickets for music festivals (CIMMfest), and built green homes in Costa Rica (Creaverde Group). (Chris met his wife at that film fest!)

Chris was a great guest with a wealth of insight on all things digital marketing, NFTs, entrepreneurship, cryptocurrency and web3.

In this Episode:

  • Chris talks about the various digital marketing needs of sports teams like the Bulls and the Cubs.
  • Chris talks about the need to think about all the various touchpoints in an integrated way.
  • Chris talks about his investments and work with NFTs and Crypto.
  • Chris talks about his NFT project Seabums, which is a project that supports ocean health.

Quotes from this Episode:
“We're forward thinking because we're small and agile, like it's too our advantage to be on the cutting edge.” – Chris Madden
“Well, I know that we wanna talk about what's going on right now. And right now the NFT projects are very, very slow.” – Chris Madden
“NFTs are essentially unique collectibles. They don't have to be collectibles, they can be arts, but collectible is the easiest way I think, mentally to compare it to something in the real world where it's just unique.” – Chris Madden
“So we donated so far over $144,000 to ocean charities. We have a really cool global community of NFT holders who would like to get out and help the environment, pick up trash near the ocean and on beaches.” – Chris Madden
“So I think it's, that agility is the key piece because you never quite know what's gonna happen.” – Chris Madden
