Social media is everywhere. As hard as many of you are trying to deny it, social media is here to stay. It has changed the way we do business. It has changed the way we market our business. It has changed the way we communicate with each other. We can debate whether this is good or bad if you want, but the fact remains that social media isn't going away. It's December, that time of year when everyone takes a shot at predicting the future. We live in a marketing world where everything is changing almost daily. If we aren't making predictions we've taken our eye off the ball and we're likely to miss something. LinkedIn launched its new Endorsement feature several weeks ago and many of us are still trying to determine if we like this feature or not. There is no lack of discussion on the usefulness of the feature and the annoyance of those emails we’re getting every day that provide us with the first name only of a person who has endorsed us, hoping we will reciprocate. Putting aside for a moment the big-picture ramifications of this feature, I want to focus on the effects this feature may have on LinkedIn users in regulated industries, like financial advisors. With the exception of LinkedIn, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies are participating in social media networks significantly less than the rest of us. CEO.com and Brandfog conducted surveys and looked at how many CEOs were actually using social media and what kind of influence they had. Their findings are startling. (more…)
