Since there's over a foot of snow outside and the high today is supposed to be 20, after shoveling the driveway and sidewalk, I decided to spend the rest of the day inside today. As you would expect, I had to spend some time on Facebook. While poking around there I found a new feature called “Suggested Events,” which uses your Facebook check-in information to suggest events you may want to attend. (more…)

Twitter got a major upgrade yesterday and now sports a brand new look and many new features worth exploring. I think this was a major update resulting in a new website, new apps for iOS and Android and a major update to it's recently acquired social media integrator, TweetDeck. (more…)

In 2009 Facebook changed its privacy settings without telling users and the FTC brought charges that were resolved this week. The changes made by Facebook resulted in portions of user's accounts becoming public, including their profile picture, birthday, friends list and other personal information. (more…)

I have always felt that some marketing rules mirror life's rules to live by. For example, I believe any business using social media or thinking about integrating social media into their current marketing plan must consider the six P's: Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. All too often a business owner goes to the youngest member of the staff, or an intern, and says, “We need to start doing that social media stuff. Everyone else is.” When the staff person or intern inquires about the details, the answer is, “How would I know, just get us out there and fast.” All too often there is no plan or there is a skeleton plan that doesn't include any goal or a roadmap to achieve them. Earlier this week I spoke to a group about using LinkedIn to assist with a job search. In researching the topic I came across this infographic compiled by CareerEnlightenment.com. The group I spoke to asked lots of great questions and appeared to be engaged and open to the idea of using a social network to assist with their job search. Often times the questions I receive stem from dis-belief or an unwillingness to try something “new” to assist. Hopefully, this infographic will help those non-believers at least consider the possibility that social media could help with a job search. What do you have to lose? (more…)
