I have always felt that some marketing rules mirror life's rules to live by. For example, I believe any business using social media or thinking about integrating social media into their current marketing plan must consider the six P's: Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. All too often a business owner goes to the youngest member of the staff, or an intern, and says, “We need to start doing that social media stuff. Everyone else is.” When the staff person or intern inquires about the details, the answer is, “How would I know, just get us out there and fast.” All too often there is no plan or there is a skeleton plan that doesn't include any goal or a roadmap to achieve them. Last week, Twitter released its own web analytics tool to help website owners who rely on Twitter for content distribution determine how much traffic they are getting from the site. Google quietly launched “Flight Search,” a cloud tool enabling you to find and book flights on the web. Google provided an “early look” at the tool demonstrating with flights from cities like Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Dallas, New York and Chicago. Airlines participating with Google on this project include Delta, JetBlue, Continental and American. (more…)

Business owners we meet with are increasingly asking about Twitter. They want to know if Twitter is really a good place to be interacting with customers, providing customer service and marketing their products or services. Some of this stems from the publicity Frank Eliason, better known as “@comcastcares” received a few years ago. Some of this stems from a need to tap into a younger market during an economic downturn.
