Though face-to-face networking remains crucial to the success of your business, taking advantage on online tools can be a great supplement to all your other efforts to find prospects. Personally, I'm not always comfortable at networking events. Trolling for customers online is very comfortable and often leads to the identification of a prospect followed by a live meeting for coffee. The first time a post about Twitter appeared on my blog was March 2009. My, how time and Tweets fly. With 500 million registered users and 33 billion Tweets flying across the Twittersphere every day, Twitter has become a member of our family and a major part of our daily online experience. We've had several months to tinker with the latest version of Twitter so I'd like to discuss why this latest version is important for your business to be using. I still think every business owner needs to do some due diligence before jumping into the Twittersphere, but this version of Twitter is a total redesign and offers a greatly simplified experience for brands and consumers. This past week fast-food giant McDonald's rolled out a 24-hour promoted (That means they paid for it) Twitter campaign to illicit positive stories from suppliers. The campaign first used the hashtag #MeetTheFarmers. The intent of the campaign was to focus on their organic potato farmers and encourage people to think “Healthy” when they thought of McDonald's. 2011 was a big year for social media. The “Big Three,” Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn got bigger. Hundreds, maybe thousands of other social networks flourished. One would be hard=pressed to make the case that social media is still just a fad. Instead, it's become clear social media is here to stay. It has fundamentally changed the way we do business and the way we document our everyday lives. One in every nine people on Earth are on Facebook and people spend over 700 billion minutes a month sharing photos and status updates.
