LinkedIn launched its new Endorsement feature several weeks ago and many of us are still trying to determine if we like this feature or not. There is no lack of discussion on the usefulness of the feature and the annoyance of those emails we’re getting every day that provide us with the first name only of a person who has endorsed us, hoping we will reciprocate. Putting aside for a moment the big-picture ramifications of this feature, I want to focus on the effects this feature may have on LinkedIn users in regulated industries, like financial advisors. With the exception of LinkedIn, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies are participating in social media networks significantly less than the rest of us. Two years ago when I started my business eight out of ten people I met with told me “Social media is a fad. I'm not willing to risk spending money in a down economy on something that won't be in existence in another year or two.” Two years later, Facebook announced it has one billion active users and I never hear the phrase “Social media is a fad.” Social media is big business. Social media is being woven into businesses of all sizes. Social media is where people go before they purchase your product or service. According to a study from Healthcare Market Research and advisory firm Manhattan Research, digital health activities are becoming increasingly multi-screen.
