People often ask me, “Will customer reviews help or hurt my business?” Several months ago, I advised readers not to panic over customer reviews and to claim their accounts on Google Local, Yelp, and other sites that list businesses and accept reviews. Since then, I’ve come across a mix of opinions regarding customer reviews, and I still think that good, honest businesses benefit from reviews, even if they aren’t always full of praise. (more…)

It’s been a busy updating season for Google and SEO. In late September, it released an update to its Panda algorithm, which may not affect you very much if you’ve been playing by Google rules and not trying to get away with black hat or spammy practices. Moreover, Panda gives local businesses a good reason to revisit their content because it came after another update, Pigeon, which focuses on searches for local businesses. (more…)

You’ve probably noticed when you search for a service on Google or Yahoo, some of the listings indicate customer reviews. Google links to them. Yahoo shows the average rating. Both also list reviews by Yelp, a popular review site focusing on local businesses. (more…)

Yahoo's chief executive Marissa Mayer appears to be on course to turn around Yahoo, a company many took for dead not long ago. A review of recent interviews indicates Mayer's vision for Yahoo “is about making the world's daily habits more inspiring and entertaining.” Mayer also has been telling us that Yahoo is developing technology intended to personalize content from the Internet and make it accessible to people on their mobile devices.
